Umpires are responsible for making sure that baseball, softball, and other ball games are played fairly. They ensure that all the rules in a set of guidelines or the local governing organization's rules are followed. In doing so, they ensure that games have consistent and fair results. This allows for an enjoyable experience for everyone involved: players, coaches, managers, parents, game spectators, umpires themselves, and even sometimes sportswriters. The umpire will keep track of the time, enforce fouls, review penalties or other infractions, and, if necessary, warn or disqualify players.
