The correctional officer is responsible for maintaining the security of the institution through prevention, intervention, surveillance, observation, detection, and correction of unlawful activities within the institution. COs are responsible for searching inmates and their living quarters for illegal contraband (such as drugs or weapons) to ensure a safe working environment. Knowledge of operating procedures for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) functions required for deployment in an emergency situation.
